Mostly affecting areas such as the thighs, hips, abdomen and buttocks, Cellulite is a harmless condition.
Although the causes of cellulite are often unconfirmed, it is thought that fibrous cords attach the skin to the underlying muscles, allowing fat cells to lay between. If the fat cells build up and increase in size, they can push the skin up as the cords pull down, creating a dimpled surface. Genetics and hormonal changes are also associated with the development of cellulite, factors that can determine the type of body we have and the texture of the skin. People who are overweight can often be affected by more noticeable cellulite, but those whose lifestyle is less active can also have it, including slimmer people too. Women are more likely to develop this condition than men, simply because the fat in a female is distributed differently to that of a man, with changes in hormones thought to be a contributing factor.
Attempts to improve the appearance of cellulite can include; weight loss, increased exercise, cosmetic creams and massage. Although these methods can see a reduction in the severity of the condition, it may not go away completely, and is only a short term solution.
